Fogo Island Inn
Elemental. Communal. At the edge of the world.
49.7248° N, 54.1726° W
An inn on an island off the island of Newfoundland, perched on stilts above the North Atlantic. Twenty-nine suites of floor-to-ceiling windows. Handmade quilts by local artists. Three Michelin Keys. The most morally serious luxury hotel in the world.
Arrival
You fly to Gander, then drive to the ferry, then cross to the island. The approach cannot be shortened. By the time the Inn appears on its stilts above the rocks, you have already left your previous pace of life behind.
The Register
Every detail was made on the island or sourced from it. The quilts are stitched by local women. The binoculars in each room are for spotting icebergs — a practical tool for where you are. Your community host is not a guide. They are a resident of Fogo Island who will tell you things not in any itinerary.
Arc of a Day
Morning: the ocean through your wall of glass. An iceberg may or may not be present.
Midmorning: a boat trip to the Little Fogo Islands, or a watercolour workshop with a local artist.
Evening: dinner in the dining room facing the ocean. The word remote stops meaning isolated and starts meaning essential.
“An iceberg may or may not be visible from your window. If one is, it will have drifted overnight. The ocean does not repeat itself.”
What This Place Is For
Fogo Island Inn was built to prove a struggling outport fishing community could sustain itself without abandoning what it was. You leave knowing your having been there made it slightly more possible for it to continue.
